ONODA’s Gas Meter Business in Bangladesh Featured in a JICA Publication

On May 20, 2026, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) published a book entitled “New Market Strategies for the Global South,” which features ONODA’s initiative to promote prepaid gas meters for residential customers in Bangladesh.

Our initiative is introduced in the publication as a successful example of a business that contributes to solving social challenges in the Global South.

Case Study 2: ONODA Inc.

Key Points

Social Challenge:

Although Bangladesh is a natural gas-producing country, inadequate pipeline and distribution network infrastructure has resulted in dependence on imported LPG, leading to increased fiscal burdens and accident risks. In addition, gas supply and production have not kept pace with growing demand, making more efficient use of gas increasingly important, including reducing leakage and losses, managing demand, and improving equipment efficiency.

ONODA’s Initiative:

By installing prepaid gas meters, ONODA has demonstrated the effectiveness of a metered billing system in which customers are charged according to their actual gas consumption. ONODA has also successfully supplied these meters to a state-owned gas distribution company in Bangladesh.

Competitive Strategy:

Although this initiative represents the overseas deployment of a prototype product, ONODA customized its gas meters to meet local needs and limited their functions to essential features, thereby keeping costs down.

Overview of the Social Challenge

In many countries in the Global South, reducing social inequality and poverty is a key priority. The development and modernization of energy infrastructure that supports domestic industries is therefore essential.
